October - Weekly Sydney Nights, a New Melbourne Home & More

Hey Lucky Tiles fam,

October's here and the weather's warming up (mostly, sorry Melbourne). Grab a cuppa. Here's a catch-up on what's been happening in Sydney and Melbourne, and what's coming next.

A Look Back in September

Sydney: We rang in two years of Lucky Tiles with our Birthday Bash at Cha & Zak's Clubhouse in Marrickville. There were mooncakes, mahjong, and two years' worth of good company we never quite planned for when we started this thing.

Melbourne: We said goodbye to Temple Arden with Mooncakes & Mahjong on the 24th. It was a Mid-Autumn send-off for a venue that gave us so many great nights. Saying farewell to a home base is never easy, but the community was never really about the room. It's about who shows up.

Thank you to everyone who came along in both cities.

What's Coming Up

Our October calendar is now live across Sydney and Melbourne, and tickets are open! Here are a couple of highlights we're excited about:

Sydney Melbourne

SYDNEY — Big news: mahjong is now weekly!

  • Every Thursday at Ni Hao Bar
  • Every Friday at Tea Journal

MELBOURNE — We've found a new home in the city 🎉

Join us for our launch night at Ho Liao Melbourne in the CBD on Thursday 29 October, 7:00–9:00 PM. It's our first night there, so come help us christen the tables and make it a good one.

Community Moments

In case you missed it, Lucky Tiles made a little appearance on ABC! 📺

It was lovely to share a glimpse of what we're about, and it reminded us why we started this club: to keep mahjong culture alive and growing. Mahjong has been part of so many of our families for generations, and we want to keep that going, with new friends, at new tables.

There's a little world inside a mahjong set

A mahjong set can look like a collection of numbers, characters and symbols. But look a little closer, and you'll find winds, flowers and seasons woven into the game.

The four Winds (East, South, West and North) give the table its direction. They decide where we sit and shape each round.

The Flowers and Seasons (plum, orchid, chrysanthemum and bamboo; spring, summer, autumn and winter) are bonus tiles. When one turns up, it's revealed and replaced, a small, unexpected bit of luck.

And perhaps that's where some of mahjong's subtlety lies.

You can plan your hand, but you can never completely control what comes next. You have to work with what you're given - when to hold on, when to let go, when to take a chance, and when to change direction.

Then the round ends.

The tiles are gathered back together, shuffled, and the wall is built again.

Spring becomes summer. East becomes South. One hand becomes the next.

There is something wonderfully human in that rhythm. Mahjong doesn't promise that you can control your luck. Instead, it asks you to adapt to change, make the most of what you have, and stay present with the people around you.

Maybe that's why, after all these years and across so many different places, people still gather around a mahjong table.

The tiles are only part of the game. The real magic has always been what happens between them.

See you at the table, and stay tuned. Big things are brewing. ✨
